Hunter region residents are largely in favour of renewable energy investment and see the energy transition as beneficial for regional Australia, according to a new survey commissioned by Renew Australia for All.
The survey, conducted by 89 Degrees East, showed that 71% of locals believe Australia will benefit moving towards renewable energy, while 73% think that renewable energy and battery storage offer the quickest way to cut power bills.
Hunter Workers Secretary Leigh Shears noted that the survey results reflect what Unions are already hearing in the community. “Our communities expect governments, state and federal, to get moving on the energy transition and secure these opportunities, ensuring that no one is left behind."
Mr. Shears added that workers in the Hunter region view the renewable energy transition as a critical economic opportunity, especially as the region faces major industrial changes in the near future. Projects like Hunter Offshore Wind have the potential to bring economic growth and deliver the high-paid, quality jobs that local communities need to thrive.
“Our region has the potential to be the epicentre of renewable energy manufacturing and technology, driving investment in emerging industries and supply chains locally, nationally, and abroad.”
An ACM survey earlier this year also found that 70% of coastal-regional voters support offshore wind infrastructure in their communities, while 75% oppose the idea of nuclear infrastructure. The results indicate that Opposition Leader Peter Dutton could face significant challenges in securing support for his shoddy proposal to build nuclear power plants across Australia, including in the Hunter region.
